Another First in the Industry: The ASBA Gym Floor Paint and Finish School

The American Sports Builders Association hosted its inaugural Gym Floor Paint and Finish School at Destiny Christian Academy in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the week of November 11, following their successful gym floor sanding school. The workshop aimed to train 15 student contractors in applying game lines, logos, and finishes to gym floors, many of whom had no prior experience in these techniques.

Key highlights of the event included:

  • Training Sessions:
    • Participants practiced laying game lines under the guidance of Kolton Krolow from Western Sport Floors, learning game line hierarchy and layout techniques.
    • Students practiced in the dining area before applying their skills to the actual gym floor.
    • Tim Young from Basic Coatings demonstrated the use of tinted sealers for staining court keys.
  • Hands-On Work:
    • Students applied game lines, laid stencils for the center logo, painted the floor, and sealed it with a professional finish.
    • While some initial mistakes required rework, all participants gained confidence and refined their skills.
  • Community and Recognition:
    • The team enjoyed camaraderie with dinners and social activities, fostering lasting connections.
    • The workshop resulted in a beautifully refinished gym floor for the Academy, a first in its 24 years of ownership.

Sponsors: The event was made possible with support from Bona US, Basic Coatings, Rustic Wood Floor Supply, and PoloPlaz.

The ASBA looks forward to announcing dates for its 2025 schools soon.
