A First for Our Industry: The ASBA Gym Floor Sanding School

The American Sports Builders Association held its first-ever fall gym floor sanding school in Cheyenne, Wyoming, at Destiny Christian Academy. The school, a K-12 private Christian institution, had not maintained its gym floor in 24 years due to limited funding. The program gave 11 student contractors hands-on training, many of whom were new to using floor sanders.

Key highlights of the event included:

  • Training Sessions: Students learned safety, maintenance, and operation of sanding equipment. They practiced with the machines turned off before advancing to live usage and learned advanced skills like applying abrasive to a split drum sander.
  • Presentations: Industry experts provided lessons on gym floor sanding theory, abrasives, tape application, and finish sealing.
  • Hands-On Work: Participants sanded 95% of the 7,200-square-foot gym floor, dealing with water damage through crosscut sanding and preparing the floor for sealing.
  • Community Connection: The group visited the Wyoming State Capitol, strengthening camaraderie and creating lasting friendships.

By the end of the program, attendees gained valuable skills and contributed to revitalizing the gym floor, leaving the event with enhanced expertise in gym floor maintenance.
